Important People Dont Want a Cup of Coffee. Heres What to Ask for Instead

Important People Dont Want a Cup of Coffee. Heres What to Ask for InsteadImportant People Dont Want a Cup of Coffee. Heres What to Ask for InsteadIts the absolute worst sales technique you can do. These guys were billionaires. Do you think they really needed a cup of coffee? In a fascinating talk, James Altucher explains that he used a terrible strategy when he compiled a list of 20 partieal business heroes and asked them via emaille if he could buy them a cup of coffee and have 20 minutes of their time.He facetiously explains that he expected them to say, Hold everything James Altucher is going to buy me a cup of coffee. Ive never heard of this guy at all, and Im going to go downstairs right now and have a cup of coffee with him. Stop the whole business.Similarly, Ted Rubin makes it clear on his blog deutsche post dhl that you should never ask people if you can pick their brain. Think about the phrase for a second- pick their brain- thats about as invasive as it gets. Its actually q uite creepy I cant help but think of the ancient Egyptian mummification process, in which they would pick your brain through your nose, piece by piece. (You were already dead during this process, thankfully.)Remember that successful people are busy, and they view their time as their greatest asset. A cup of coffee is a poor return on their investment. If they spend 20 minutes with you, theyre spending 20 minutes away from their family, 20 minutes away from their business, and 20 minutes away from a million other possibilities. Even if they genuinely want to help, they cant possibly say yes to everyone who invites them out to a cup of coffee (or a creepy brain picking session). As Warren Buffett puts it, The difference between successful people and really successful people is that really successful people say no to almost everything. So, the question is How do you create a win-win situation? How can you get the opportunity to soak up the knowledge and wisdom of incredible people in yo ur field, all the while giving them a high return on their investment of their greatest asset their time?Heres an idea thats worked for me a podcast interview. Why Podcasting WorksIll be the first to tell you that podcasting isnt for everyone. Ill also be the first to tell you that podcasting takes a lot of hard work (though thats true of anything worthwhile). But sitting down with someone and interviewing them for a podcast is incredibly valuable. In fact, its a win-win-win situation because there are three parties involved1. YouIf someone agrees to an interview, you now get to have a one-on-one conversation with him or her. Maybe its 20 minutes. Maybe its 30 minutes. Maybe its an hour. Regardless of the amount of time, you get to ask questions about this persons background, struggles, and successes, plus ask for advice. How cool is that? (And its free. Some business coaches charge $500 an hour)Not only do you gain priceless insight from your interview, but youre laying the foundatio n for a personal relationship. A tweet and an email can easily be lost in the noise. A one-on-one conversation is difficult to forget, especially when the other person gets to talk about him- or herself the whole time.2. Your GuestIf you can feature a successful businessperson or entrepreneur on a podcast and promote it to your network (and even beyond), this is great exposure. Perhaps this person has a new book hes promoting. Perhaps her business is launching a new product. Perhaps his service-oriented company is expanding. Whatever the case may be, the free exposure can be an exponentially greater return on someones investment than a $2 cup of coffee.3. Your AudienceDont forget about this one A well-done podcast offering encouragement, inspiration, and actionable advice can benefit dozens, hundreds, even thousands of people. Just remember Your audience is taking time out of their busy schedule to listen your podcast. Thats quite a privilege. Theyre never getting that time back, so honor them by giving a return on their investment. Now What?So youve decided this is a good idea- now what?Ive run a podcast for about eight months now, and Ive interviewed more than 50 people. My business partner and I started from scratch and- time and time again- weve been pleasantly surprised (pleasantly shocked is more like it) by the generosity of leaders in our field, as well as the other bloggers, podcasters, and publishers weve connected with. That said, its not all fun and games. Here are a few things Ive learned along the wayBe ConsistentIt will help you become a reliable authority. I recommend releasing one episode per week. If youre highly ambitious, you can release three episodes per week, but trust me Thats easier said than done. There isnt a magical day of the week- Monday isnt better than Thursday- the key is to pick a day of the week and own that day. Become a reliable source for your audience and train them to know when they can expect a new episode.Streamline the FormatImagine your favorite show was 15 minutes long one week, two hours long the next week, and 37 minutes long the following week. You would probably be confused and frustrated It would be difficult to plan your life around such an arbitrary schedule, even with all of our fancy streaming and recording tools. Plus, the people you interview will want to know exactly how much time you will need. Its your call, but a 30-45 minute interview is probably the right amount of time if youre bringing on guests. Ask NicelyWhen pitching to potential guests, start by building a relationship with them on social media. Almost all of my guests started with a tweet. Sometimes I compliment their blog post, sometimes I tell them I loved their book (Im always genuine when doing this). After you get the ball rolling with the Twitter conversation, move to old-fashioned email and ask them to be on your show. Keep this email as short as possible, of course. Remember, theyre busy and they definitely dont h ave time to read a novel-sized email (which can easily happen when you get nervous and excited). After you get a few guests under your belt, the pitching process becomes easier. You build a bit of a portfolio, which is great for sharing with potential guests. Many of them may think, Well if this interview was worth so-and-sos time, it should be worth my time too.Be a Great InterviewerJust like youd do if you were sitting someone down over coffee, do your prep work. Research the person youll be talking to, practice your public speaking skills, and draft up great questions ahead of time. What to ask? If youre bringing industry experts on your show, ask about their industry. Ask for tips, mistakes to avoid, and personal stories about their background. Think of Jimmy Fallon or Conan OBrien. Theyre always looking for more than the celebritys upcoming film. Theyre looking for funny behind the scenes stories. If youve ever said, Id like to buy you a cup of coffee and pick your brain, dont fe el guilty. Ive made this rookie mistake, myself. I even tweeted a similar question to Gary Vaynerchuk once. (He responded and very kindly explained that time was the one thing he couldnt spare.)But do get creative- and look for other ways to get that career-boosting advice you need.Photo of coffee courtesy of Shutterstock.

3 leadership lessons from Googles terrible, horrible, no good, very bad week

3 leadership lessons from Googles terrible, horrible, no good, very bad week3 leadership lessons from Googles terrible, horrible, no good, very bad weekGoogle CEO Sundar Pichai is having a hard week.First, he had to return early from his family vacation to deal with the reaction to acontroversial internal memo on Googles diversity initiatives. Then, Pichai welches supposed to hold a town hall Thursday afternoon with employees to discuss the memo and the firing of its author, James Damore. But shortly before the town hall was platzdeckchen to be held, Pichai said the meeting had beencanceled due to threats to employees. We had hoped to have a frank, open discussion today as we always do to bring us together and move forward, Pichai wrote in a memo to employees. But our Dory questions an internal app for employees appeared externally this afternoon, and on some websites Googlers are now being named personally. Googlers are writing in, concerned about their safety and worried they may be outed publicly for asking a question in the Town Hall.Earlier on Thursday, Milo Yiannopoulos, whocalls himselfa virtuous troll and has been banned on Twitter for harassment, had posted on his Facebook the social media profiles of Google employees who identified as gay or supportive of diversity efforts.Titled Googles Ideological Echo Chamber, the memo, which suggested womens biological differences made them less fit to work in technology, sparked heated debate inside and outside of the company, as did Google firing its author on Monday.Although Google did bedrngnis specifically comment on the firing, Damore toldnews outlets that he had been fired for perpetuating gender stereotypes. Some Googlers sided with Damore, saying that his opinion should be protected under the First Amendment. Others supported his firing, saying that he had created a textbook hostile environment that would make collaboration with co-workers impossible.Amidst calls for Pichai to be fired, he and his executive leadership team have held firm about their decision. Heres what we can learn from them on how to manage during a crisis.Communicate with transparencyLeaders in a crisis need to be as open as possible with employees about what they know. Nothing sows panic and confusion like gossip and rumors in an office. Stopping this misinformation flood means assessing the gravity of the situation and counteracting with information of your own.Transparent communication means engaging with all key stakeholders who are impacted by the decision. By holding an all-hands meeting to answer questions and concerns, Pichai signaled that he was going to do this.Signal your valuesWhatever Googles executives decided about the memo, the result was guaranteed to alienate some population of their employees. Being a leader means learning to be unpopular.According to the Recode reporting about the meetings that led to Damores firing, top executives were initially split between fostering a safe environment for al l employees and defending free speech. Sundar had to make a call about what kind of Google he wanted to stress and he did, one anonymous top executive told Recode. To suggest a group of our colleagues have traits that make them less biologically suited to that work is offensive and not OK, Pichai said in his internal memo about why Damore had violated the Google Code of Conduct.YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, who was reportedly in the meeting when the firing was decided, said that Damores statements about biology were what tipped Google into action. While people may have a right to express their beliefs in public, that does not mean companies cannot take action when women are subjected to comments that perpetuate negative stereotypes about them based on their gender, she wrote in an essay about the memo for Fortune. Every day, companies take action against employees who make unlawful statements about coworkers, or create hostile work environments.Commit to what you promiseAfter the town h all was canceled, Pichai still found a way to show a commitment to the companys values by speaking at a girls coding event happening that same day on Googles California campus. The audience was filled with young women who were competing in an app-building competition. When Pichai addressed them, he championed these future women engineers and coders, publicly challenging any detractors about the value of diversity initiatives. Its really important that more women and girls have the opportunity to participate in technology, to learn how to code, create, and innovate, Pichai said. I want you to know that theres a place for you in this industry, theres a place for you at Google. Dont let anyone tell you otherwise. You belong here and we need you.

How to Ace an Interview for a Freelance Job

How to Ace an Interview for a Freelance JobHow to Ace an Interview for a Freelance JobWhile a freelance job interview isnt extremely different from a normal, permanent-position interview, interviewing for a freelance or contract position can require a slightly different approach. As a freelancer, its important to emphasize your diligence, dependability, and trustworthiness. Additionally, since a client might be screening numerous other freelancers, its always important to be on the top of your game. Heres How to Ace an Interview for a Freelance Gig Focus on your experience and skills most applicable to the job youre applying for. Many freelancers have a variety of skills, and might dabble in multiple different freelance ventures at the saatkorn time. However, its important to focus your interview answers on the specific job youre applying for. This might seem obvious, but sometimes even the same title can take on two different forms. Think, for example, about a project manager wh o might be managing software development in one gig, and research or development in another. Or, a graphic designer who works on everything from responsive web design to print brochures to banners. Make sure you fully understand the job youre applying for, and then tailor your answers to include your skills and experience most relevant to the job at hand.Review some of the questions you may be asked, so you can prepare a response. Do make a mention of your other attributes. Thats certainly not to say that you should present yourself as a single-focus freelancer if thats not the case. If you do have other skills that you think could add value to your clients projects, share them. This can help strengthen your case if you present it in the right way. For example, you might say, Though my focus is graphic design, I am also a copywriter, so I can assist with writing, editing and proofreading the copy on your marketing materials, in addition to working on the design. Be ready to provide references. As a freelancer, having references to vouch for you is very important. Unlike working in a permanent position where poor performance would get you fired or demoted, and thus be evident on your resume, poor performance as a freelancer isnt always as obvious. So, dont be surprised if a client wants to speak to your references. Have your references contact information ready to share. A past client who appreciated your work is ideal. If thats not possible, ask a former manager or supervisor, a former coworker or someone youve worked directly with in some capacity. Be mindful about providing the contact information of your existing clients. You dont want them to think youre ditching them or overloading yourself to the point where youre unable to fully invest yourself in their work. Come with talking points. While its relatively easy to wing it when talking about your own experience (though this certainly isnt a recommended approach), its not easy to wing it when youre talking to a client about his or her company or past projects. It really does benefit you to Google like crazy research the person youre interviewing with, the company, projects theyve worked on in the past and even other people theyve worked with. Once youve found this information, how can you use it? Here are some suggestions You can express admiration for one of their past projects, and note ways that it might be similar to a successful project youve worked on.Emphasize your appreciation for their mission statement or organizational goals and provide examples of how your own experience lines up.You can ask what distinguishes them from similar companies, or acknowledge a unique approach they might have taken in their work (citing specific examples from your research). Ask the right questions. Convey your attention to detail, organizational abilities and planning skills by asking specific questions about the position you would like to take on. You can ask How many hours per week youre ex pected to workWhat is the clients end goal in the projectsIf the client has taken on projects like this before, and if so, what approaches and work styles have been successful in the past, and what has been unsuccessfulWhat forms of communication will be usedHow often will meetings or check-ins be required Emphasize your dedication and diligence. By nature, freelance or contract work requires a high level of trust between client and contractor trust that the contractor work will get done well and on time, while working independently, and that the client will pay in a timely manner as well. Its important to establish yourself as someone who is trustworthy, responsible and accessible. Additionally, youll want to portray yourself as someone who is committed to a project even if you arent an official or permanent member of the clients team. The best way to do this is to share specific anecdotes or examples about when you went above and beyond as a freelancer. Have your application mater ials and assets ready to share. Provide a printed copy of your resume and your portfolio, if applicable. If you cant provide a hard copy of work examples, have a internetadresse to share or bring your laptop or tablet to the interview so your potential new client can view your work on the spot. If you didnt provide these resources during your interview, follow up immediately with a thank you note that includes relevant links. Know what youre worth. If the topic of payment comes up during your interview, dont waiver or sound unsure. Be honest about what youre usually paid - dont pad it, but dont be afraid to speak up for your worth. Here are tips for pricing freelance projects and how to negotiate freelance rates. Stay professional. Treat your freelance interview as formally as you would any other interview, whether youre interviewing by phone, by video, or in-person. Show up on time, or early present yourself in a polished, professional manner since your interviewer could be speaking to a multitude of people, its especially important to be on top of your game.Check out these tips on how to prepare for an interview ahead of time.

This industry has millions of jobs that no one can fill

This industry has millions of jobs that no one can fillThis industry has millions of jobs that no one can fillToo few workersIf youre looking for a change in career, it may be time to try on a hard hat.Manufacturing is on the rise again, according to a new report by consulting firm Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute. But as technical skillsets and demographics change, there arent enough people in the industry to fill the number of projected jobs in coming years. The study found that 2.4 million jobs could be left unfilled over the next decade, and the shortage could put $2.5 trillion of economic output at risk.Too few workers89% of surveyed executives agree the industry has a shortage of talent. Most of them offer higher pay to bring on or keep skilled workers, but they are often thwarted in those efforts when an outside company makes an even more attractive offer. The skill shortage comes from two major phenomena. One was bound to happen As some baby boomers age out of the workf orce and decide to retire, the 2.6 million manufacturing jobs they occupy will become empty. But demand is also a major contributing factor The study estimates almost 2 million new manufacturing jobs will flood the market by 2028.Far from disappearing because of smart technologies like artificial intelligence, manufacturing is actually booming and job listings are nearing their historical peak. So who will fill all those positions? In the irony of ironies, Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute recommend turning toward automation to supplement human jobs that are going unfilled. Remember how we were all afraid that one day robots would take our jobs?

Ways to get people to do things they dont want to do

Ways to get people to do things they dont want to doWays to get people to do things they dont want to doA reader recently asked me a pointed question Ive read your work on creatinguser habits. Its all well and good for getting people to do things, like using an app on their iPhone, but Ive got a bigger problem. How do I get people to do things they dont want to do? Taken aback by the directness and potentially immoral implications of his question, my gut reaction was to say, You cant and shouldnt To which his response was, I have to its my job. This gentleman, who asked that I not disclose his name, is the corporate equivalent of the guy the mob sends to break kneecaps if a worker doesnt do as theyre told. For the past decade, he has run the same methodical process of cajoling, and at times threatening, people to do things they dont want to do. Its really unfair and mean. I know it is, he said. But people have to comply or else people get hurt.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThis man is an identity and access management auditor at a well-known public accounting firm. Not exactlyGood Fellas, but high-stakes nonetheless. His Fortune 500 clients pay his firm to ensure managers complete lengthy inquiries involving hundreds of employees collecting thousands of pieces of information, usually on tight deadlines. Ever since Sarbanes-Oxley, ansicht user access reviews just have to get done.Though the auditors job is unique, getting peopleto do uninteresting tasks (specifically those that are infrequent and involve work done outside normal responsibilities) is a common challenge. What are the ways to get people to do things they dont want to do?A Shot in the ArmI pondered this question and searched my mental database for examples of companies Ive worked with or could reference as case studies. But instead, I thought about the last time I saw someone willfully doing s omething they didnt want to do my four-year-old daughter came to mind.We had recently taken her to the pediatrician for a final round of shots before kindergarten and, to our surprise, she left the doctors office with a spring in her step and a smile on her face. To a child, there are few things more terrifying than getting deckenfries with needles, and it was the closest equivalent I could think of to completing the auditors user access reviews. What made my daughters visit to the doctor so painless helps illustrate three tactics anyone can use to get people to do things they dont inherently want to do.1. One Prick At A TimeWhen the nurse stepped into the examining room, my daughter knew something was up. On a small tray, she carried four intimidating syringes. But instead of showing them all to my daughter, she thoughtfully kept them out of view. At the appropriate time, she reached for a needle, one by one, careful to consider how her actions would be perceived by my daughter. She tamed the instruments of toddler torment through what designers callprogressive disclosure to the nurse, it was just considerate common sense.Staging tasks into small conquerable chunks is so basic yet so underutilized. Who wouldnt take the time to ease a childs fear with a little well-planned parsing? Yet in the office, it is all too common to lob large complex requests at our colleagues and be surprised by the ill-will we get in return. In the auditors case for example, he admitted that his clients start by sending long memos accompanied by even longer spreadsheets detailing the entire tedious task. No wonder their emails are met with contempt.Managers pushing down tasks know all the level of details and tend to think everyone else should, too. But thats just not the case. Most users just want to know what to do next, and flooding them with too much information induces stress and fear. Having the forethought to appropriately stage the work can reduce this fear, which ironically, in both children and adults, is often much worse than the prick of the needle itself.2. Reduce The Pain With ProgressIn the auditors case, his requests were particularly painful because they were too infrequent to become skill-building bungs. Whereas many tasks become easier with time as people improve their abilities, corporate fire drills are dreaded for many reasons. For one, they distract workers from their regular duties. They often require learning new processes or hunting down long-discarded information. And worst of all, they can last for an undefined period of time, providing little visibility into when the pain will end.Just as parsing tasks into smaller chunks can make a job seem more achievable, providing greater insight into the progress made is another way to reduce cognitive stress. In the pediatricians office, the thoughtful nurse asked my daughter to count to five as she administered each shot, giving my daughter an idea of how long the pain would last and creating a sense of control. For years, game designers have utilized mechanisms to track advancement. Progress bars help players understand where they are in the game just as tracking and estimation tools could help workers better plan their work. These tools help inform how much time the next task should take and its relative place in the entire job. Providing a sense of progression is a form of feedback and is a key component of making unpleasant tasks more manageable.3. Get Out The Treasure ChestTo our amazement, even after receiving four shots, my daughter left the doctors office without shedding a single tear. The nurse used staged disclosure and eased the pain through progress indicators, but the final secret sat just outside the examination room. There, on her way in, my daughter ogled a mysterious kasten she knew was filled with prizes. After your visit, the nurse told her, youll get to pick anything youd like from the treasure chest. Offering prizes for the completion of certain tasks is effective in both children and adults, but beware, there is risk in rewards.Numerous studies have shown that extrinsic rewards - incentives that are separate from the activity itself - often backfire. Reinforcing behavior this way tends to extinguish the pleasure of doing something for its own sake. For example, studies of children rewarded for doing activities they already enjoyed - like playing drums or drawing pictures- resulted in less motivation to do the activity later on.Where long-term behaviors are the goal, more purposeful incentives are better.Self-Determination Theory, as espoused by researchers Edward Deci and Richard Ryan, contends that people are motivated by deeper psychological needs for competence, autonomy, and relatedness. Clearly, making sure people know why their work matters is always the first step. But while motivating through meaning is preferred, there are circumstances when prizes are in fact appropriate. When it comes to tasks people dont want to d o, specifically infrequent and uninteresting assignments, utilizing extrinsic rewards is safe because there is no existing behavior to de-motivate or extinguish. Shots in a four-year-olds arm and the boring, routine work doled out by the auditor qualify as just such occasions. What are appropriate rewards? Like everything in design, that depends on the rolle. Making a game out of the task doesnt necessarily mean giving away points and badges if the user doesnt find those incentives appropriate. However, utilizing other incentives, particularly those awarded with anelement of variability, can be highly encouraging, just as long as theyre used only in this very specific condition and not as part of day-to-day operations.Better Behavior DesignUnfortunately, the corporate norm remains drawing up a long list of what needs to get done and throwing it over the email wall to be completed or else There will always be tasks people dont want to do. But, there are ways to get people to do thing s they dont want to do. There are better ways to motivate others, principally by designing conditions where people actuate themselves.Fundamentally, people resist being controlled and both the carrot and the stick can be tools for unwanted manipulation. Instead, designing behavior by putting in the forethought to appropriately stage tasks, providing progress indicators, and finally, offering celebratory rewards under the right circumstances, are easy ways to motivate while maintaining a sense of autonomy.Whether in the doctors office or the corner office, it is the job of the person inflicting the pain to do their utmost to ease it. Not doing so is intellectually lazy, whether to a kid or to a colleague. Considering how the receiver could more easily comply with the request is at the heart of inspiring action. This article originally appeared on Nir Far.You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Using exact change in Venmo transactions makes us look petty

Using exact change in Venmo transactions makes us look petty Using exact change in Venmo transactions makes us look petty With just a few taps on our phone, peer-to-peer mobile payment systems like Venmo have made it possible to send our friends and family the exact amount of money we owe for that group dinner. Maybe it keeps the check balance exact, but a new study found that it will not be perceived as fair. When we pay our friends the exact amount of what we owe, we may think we’re being helpfully conscientious, but researchers Tami Kim,  Ting Zhang and Michael Norton found that the behavior can come off as petty and make us dislike the stickler. It makes us think that the friend sees us as an ATM machine and less as a friend.“These platforms making it very convenient to transfer the exact amount owed and to keep the balance sheet at exactly zero among friends,” Tami Kim, one of the study’s authors, said. “We found that could have unintended consequences because they make the relationships feel transactional in nature.”Exact Venmo transactions make us think a relationship is transactionalI n a series of experiments across American and European participants using Venmo, the researchers found that we see these exhaustively precise exchanges as petty even when they are objectively more generous. Giving a gift card of $5.15 is less wanted than a simple gift card of $5.Why does counting those extra cents come off as pettier than just rounding up or down? Because it suggests that you needlessly went the extra mile for a trivial amount of money. “Given that units like cents and minutes are less consequential than dollars and hours, we suggest- and demonstrate- that observing someone making a decision about minor units is likely to feel more trivial. Furthermore, because round amounts are often used in an approximation context, precise amounts are regarded as more intentional than round amounts,” the paper said.Apps like Venmo and PayPal makes it easier to pay someone down to the last cent. But this study suggests this is not something we necessarily want from our friends hips. In our digital age, public receipts of Venmo transactions provide new ways for us to track each other’s behavior. Leaving some room for error in your next transaction signals that you care more about the person involved than the money involved.

6 Interview Tips to Get the Job and 6 People Doing It Wrong

6 Interview Tips to Get the Job â€" and 6 People Doing It Wrong 6 Interview Tips to Get the Job - and 6 People Doing It Wrong For the majority of candidates, the job interview is the most difficult portion of the hiring process. You’re under the gun to make a strong impression. And research we’ve conducted shows that you don’t have a lot of time to do so. Sixty percent hiring managers form an opinion of job seekers in 10 minutes or less.  Almost one in five (18 percent) do it in half that time. With that in mind, here are six interview tips for the next time you’re across the desk from a potential employer - and six people who are doing it wrong, according to managers we’ve surveyed. Job Interview Tip #1 Do this … Prepare responses to common interview questions ahead of time by role-playing with a friend or mentor. But don’t go overboard. Crafting “perfect” answers could cause you to come across as stilted or prevent you from handling tricky interview questions.   Not this … “One candidate sang all of her responses to interview questions.” Job Interview Tip #2 Do this … Dress up for the interview. This is one of the easiest interview tips to follow. Wearing a suit or blazer projects professionalism and shows the hiring manager that you take the opportunity seriously. (Even many seemingly laidback IT executives prefer candidates to wear a business suit.) Not this … “An applicant wore the uniform from his former employer.” Job Interview Tip #3   Do this … Demonstrate your desire to work for the firm. Employers want to know that you see the opportunity as more than “just a job.” One way to show your genuine interest is by researching the company ahead of time and demonstrating that knowledge during the interview. Not this … “One candidate handcuffed himself to the desk during the interview.” Job Interview Tip #4 Do this … Remain respectful and professional. No matter why you left a previous role, don’t badmouth a former boss or coworkers. Otherwise, the hiring manager will wonder if you’ll get along with the existing team or not. Not this … “When asked by the hiring manager why she was leaving her current job, the applicant said, ‘My manager is a jerk. All managers are jerks.’” Job Interview Tip #5 Do this … Don’t bring up starting salary or benefits unless the hiring manager does first, or the employer has expressed serious interest in hiring you. You don’t want to make it seem like that’s all you care about. Not this … “The applicant told me he really was not interested in the position, but he liked that we allowed for a lot of time off.” Job Interview Tip #6 Do this … Ask insightful questions of the hiring manager to get a better sense of the job and the culture of the firm. This is one of those interview tips that job seekers often forget. But keep in mind that the interview is your chance to make sure the company is right for you. Not this … “When asked by the hiring manager if he had any questions for him, the candidate replied by telling a knock-knock joke.” Looking for more interview tips? 5 Management Systems Critical to Employee Performance

5 Management Systems Critical to Employee Performance 5 Management Systems Critical to Employee Performance Managers perennially ask why employees don’t do what they are supposed to do. While part of the responsibility falls on choices individual employees make, managers need to shoulder part of the blame, too. Managers and the management systems they create are commonly responsible when employees dont do what you want them to do. Employees want to succeed at work. You don’t know a single person who gets up in the morning and says, “Gee, I think I’ll go to work and fail today.” Employees often fail because of a failure in your employee management systems. To determine why an employees is failing at a task or why their goals seem unachievable, you need to ask the question that Dr. W. Edwards Deming (the father of the U.S. quality movement) traditionally asked: “What about the work system is causing the employee to fail?” An examination of the work systems usually yields important answers he was wont to say in his lectures to managers. Why Don’t Employees Do What You Want Them to Do? Internationally known consultant, speaker, and former professor at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business, Ferdinand Fournies, in his landmark book, Why Employees Don’t Do What They’re Supposed to Do and What to Do About It, says that one reason is that employees don’t know what they are supposed to do. Managers play an essential role in helping employees know what they are supposed to do. 5 Critical Management Systems Managers do this by creating effective management systems. They help employees by developing and using these five critical management systems. Management Systems: Goal Setting and Employee Involvement As a manager, youll want to design your employee management system of goal setting and employee involvement to enable employees to succeed. Help to establish overall goals for your department and work unit. Take ownership of the goals that the company requires you to meet and the goals that you can subjectively set, in addition.Communicate the goals of the work unit or enable employees to participate in setting the goals, to develop more employee ownership of the goals.Involve employees in determining how they will go about achieving the goals.Help employees know what to measure and how to measure so that they can see that they are making progress in meeting the goals. Management Systems: Delegation Delegate projects and other activities to help employees meet department goals by using effective management system delegation methods. Assist the employee to make an overall work plan with dates and a timeline for when key deliverables are due for review.Share any preconceived pictures you may have of what you want the outcome or deliverables to look like so that you and the employee share meaning.Establish the criteria for success. Youll want to create the opportunity for a celebration.Meet with the employee at designated due dates to assess progress and roadblocks encountered. You dont want to be blindsided- and the employee doesnt want to be either- if a deadline or step is missed. Management Systems: Training, Education, and Development Training plays a role in employees knowing what they are supposed to do. They need the skills and tools essential for them to succeed in their jobs. As a manager, you bear a lot of the responsibility to ensure that your reporting employees are given the opportunity to develop the skills they need to succeed. Keep commitments about employee developmental opportunities written in the performance development plan. (The ability to grow and develop their skills is crucial to  employee motivation and success).Coach employee skill development daily and in their one-on-one, weekly meetings with you. Management Systems: Recognition and Reward Recognition is the most powerful  form of employee feedback. Timely,  appropriate recognition to an employee is feedback that reinforces actions you want to see more of from the employee. If the employee is informed, through timely, specific recognition, of the types of actions you want to see, the employee is likely to repeat them. Provide recognition that is timely, and that reinforces employee learning and goal accomplishment.Recognize employees for doing what you want them to do. In a mid-sized company, semi-annual  employee satisfaction surveys  are conducted. The Culture and Communications team was not satisfied with the amount of specific information received in response to the question, How does the company make you feel that it is genuinely interested in employee well-being? The committee devised a second questionnaire and discovered that the number one factor that affected whether employees felt genuinely cared about by the company, was positive, personal interaction time with their supervisor. Pretty powerful. finding, wouldnt you say? Do you have these management systems in place? Are employees still acting as if they dont know what you want them to do? Signs That Employees Dont Know What You Want Them to Do Signs that your employees still don’t know what you want them to do include assignments that are not completed on time;procrastination on projects;errors and mistakes;a focus on non-essential, busy work;unsatisfactory amounts of output;outcomes that dont capitalize on the potential for success;unwillingness to ask for help;excuses and failure to take responsibility; andfailure to provide you with timely feedback. If you see these signs from your employees, you need to reinforce the above described five management systems to see what you need to add to make them more effective. Your employees are not stupid; they are not uncaring; they are not unmotivated. They just dont know what you want them to do.

Five ways to welcome LGBTQ employees during Pride month

Five ways to welcome LGBTQ employees during Pride month Five ways to welcome LGBTQ employees during Pride month Regardless if you’re the founder of your own company with a handful of employees, or a manager on a large team at a 500-person corporation, learning how to guide people to success is a big learning curve. While you’ll quickly discover that everyone flourishes differently, you’ll also begin to value your employees for their individual, unique qualities. Though you want to be mindful to keep your actions (and reactions) professional, it’s a smart idea to celebrate national holiday and awareness months, in an effort to show respect and kindness that boosts team morale. During the month of June, companies and managers have the opportunity to express their support for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer (LGBTQ) community in honor of Pride: a positive stance against discrimination and violence toward people within the LGBTQ community. “It is imperative that every member of your team feel comfortable at work. Managers must lead the way by consistently demonstrating kindnes s and tolerance of difference,” Amy Cooper Hakim, Ph.D., industrial-organizational psychology practitioner and workplace expert explains. “When managers support LGBTQ employees, they lead by example and let other employees know that discrimination and intolerance are not accepted in the workplace. Managers encourage tolerance and inclusion and set the tone for the office through their direct behavior and interactions.”Here’s how to professionally support your LGBTQ employees this month - and every month.Include the word ‘diversity’ in your mission statementIf you’re the CEO of your company or you lead a large team, you set the standard for what’s accepted, promoted and tolerated. And if you have the opportunity to write or contribute to the mission statement, Hakim says to make sure you center your internal guidelines around diversity, which of course, just means ‘difference.’ “In meetings, emphasize the need to embrace different ideas, different positions, and different people from all backgrounds and sexual orientations,” she shares. This open door policy from the get-go will help those within the LGBTQ community feel appreciated and comfortable in their workplace, which encourages them to not only be better employees, but happier, too. Let employees know they’ll be respected  Regardless of your employees’ personal lives outside of working hours, sexuality isn’t something that’s included in your performance review and has no role in determining or holding back a raise or a promotion. That’s why Kate Sullivan, a business psychologist and career coach notes that it’s a manager’s responsibility to make it clear to all employees - lesbian or lesbian or gay or straight or bi or transgendered or questioning- that their orientation is a non-issue. “Whether you’re heterosexual, homosexual, bi, asexual, androgyne, trans, or any other permutation of human sexuality, it doesn’t matter at work- your professional identity is wh at counts. But since your sexual identification is part of who you are as a total human, any baggage associated with that inevitably comes to work with you,” she notes. “As a manager, demonstrate to your employees every day that it’s your skills, attitude, enthusiasm, and professionalism that matters on the job- not who you choose to date.”Another thing that managers should note: the days have passed when people could argue “I don’t see color,” or “I don’t see sexuality.” That erases the experience that some employees want to embrace. Other employees may not want to. Either way, pay attention to what makes people feel respected. Instead of pretending differences don’t exist, honor the differences and stay focused on teamwork.Have regular diversity awareness training sessionsJust like most companies mandate sexual misconduct training as required, you can do the same with diversity awareness sessions. These will help other employees within the company, including those who work directly with LGBTQ employees, to understand their biases and to overcome them, if necessary. “Invite external consultants or agencies to deliver these sessions. When a company pays for training, then the employees recognize that this is important,” Hakim says. What should these sessions cover? Like above, consider budgeting for a trained professional and make sure the agendas are clear and productive. Sullivan suggests covering topics like “discriminatory speech, derogatory terms, and normative language that might be making your LGBTQ employees uncomfortable in the workplace, and more.” Offer clear and comprehensive benefits and leave policiesA (much-awaited) trend in many modern workplaces is offering family leave opportunities for not only father’s (since they’re becoming parents too), but for LGBTQ community members who are adopting or welcoming children into their households. Sullivan says by offering the same opportunities for everyone, employees wil l feel empowered and appreciated by the higher-ups. Here, it’s not just the benefits that are key, but the way you word them, too. You want to be inclusive of all. “Be sure that you offer ‘domestic partner’ benefits instead of simply spousal benefits, if it’s feasible to do so,” Sullivan says. “Instead of maternity or paternity leave, consider offering ‘parental leave’ that allows the non-birthing parent to take time with their new arrival, or that permits LGBTQ parents who are adopting to spend the necessary time during that complicated process, including giving time off for background checks, visits, paperwork, and bonding with the new arrival. Offer whatever assistance is possible to transitioning employees, including time off work and help with educating coworkers on terminology and new introductions.”Support affinity groupsMany companies encourage affinity groups for employees. Google, for instance, has “Gayglers.” These affinity groups can be valuable s ources of support, communication and job opportunities for employees of different identities.During the month of June, you could plan something special for all employees, giving everyone the opportunity to show their support of their LGBTQ co-workers and friends. It shouldn’t be mandatory, but Sullivan says it should be fun and tasteful. “Consider company sponsorship and/or volunteering in your local Pride March in or near your city or organize a Pride Week event for employees of all identities to participate and celebrate diversity together,” Sullivan explains. “If you’ve already established support structures, resources, and possibly even an Allies group within your organization, this is a great way to get people together to understand and celebrate diversity- and if you haven’t set up an Allies group, this may be a good way to kick off those efforts.”And remember: don’t call it a parade. Like Black History Month and Women’s History Month, Pride is not purely cel ebratory; it also acknowledges the struggle for equal rights. Many LGBTQ people wouldn’t even call festivities “parades”: many prefer to call them “marches” until equality for all has been reached within the community.

How to Make Your Co-workers Feel Appreciated -The Muse

How to Make Your Co-workers Feel Appreciated -The Muse How to Make Your Co-workers Feel Appreciated You love your colleagues, right? Seriously, they make your day. (Well, most of them.) But do they know that? According to writer Peter Economy, praising your co-workers can result in numerous positive changes for you, including stress reduction, an increase in empathy, and even better health. Also, showing gratitude at work increases team morale and makes you (and those around you) happier. While that all sounds obvious, not enough people put it into practice. Use these simple tips to show your co-workers just how happy you are to work at the same company. Sure they’re basic, but they’re also the first things people forget about when their to-do list is growing and they have a million and one things to get done. 1. Write a Note The other day when I got to work, there was a handwritten note waiting for me. When the mail you’re used to getting is primarily bills, junk mail, and catalogs, it’s exciting to get an actual letter! In fact, I keep the thank you notes displayed at my desk so that when I’m having a tough day at work, I can quickly take a look and boost my mood. 2. Give Credit Say you’re in a meeting or on an email thread and someone mentions a successful project you’ve worked on. If the project was a team effort, mention all of the members who helped make it a success. Explain what they did and how they directly contributed to the outcome. If there are too many names or contributions and it starts looking like an Academy Awards speech, even a brief, “The entire marketing team was invaluable!” goes a long way. 3. Give Positive Feedback Recognize and praise people’s accomplishments when you see (or hear about) them. It doesn’t haven’t to be in a long, melodramatic email- just saying it aloud can do the trick. Include specific examples that explain why you were impressed, and how the effort benefits you, your team, the company, or clients. 4. Tell the Boss You’re not the boss? Well, you can still put in a good word and let the person who determines your co-worker’s salary, promotion, and assignments know that he’s done an outstanding job. While you hope your teammate’s managing up and regularly sharing his accomplishments, it bolsters someone’s claims when his manager hears the same positive news from someone else. For example, my supervisor recently shared with me that he’d emailed two people on the management team to tell them how much he loves working with me. I was so proud: It made my week! 5. Offer to Help If your teammate’s overwhelmed with work, offer to help. Yes, it may mean that you stay a little later (and miss that show you really wanted to watch), but it will show your co-worker that you’re available when needed. Facing a slow day at work? If you finally have downtime in your schedule, email your team and see if anyone needs your assistance. Be the person who is willing to step in and print reports, staple presentations, and do the less glamorous projects that still need to get done. People will appreciate it- and be more likely to repay the favor when you’re in a bind! 6. Accept Constructive Criticism Constructive criticism is not fun, per se. But if you really listen to what the other person has to say (or read what he or she has typed in an email)- as opposed to getting defensive- he’ll feel validated. Sure, it’s hard to hear tough feedback, but your co-worker is only taking the time to provide it because he genuinely wants to help you improve. By considering his suggestions, you’ll be demonstrating that you appreciate his perspective. 7. Put Your Co-worker First, the Work Second It’s so incredibly simple, yet something that’s often overlooked. When you email someone asking if she has added slides to a presentation, kick it off by asking how her weekend was. It’ll make working together more enjoyable and it’ll show that you appreciate your teammates as actual human beings- not just people who are good at their jobs. 8. Start a Tradition Company traditions increase bonding and team morale. You can ask anyone who works at a tradition-filled company and you’ll discover that it’s true. For example, at my job we choose a Kudos King or Queen at every team meeting. When you nominate someone, you have to mention the core value he portrays, something specific he did, and how it affected you, the team, a client, or the success of a project. 9. Say Thank You This one is so obvious that it should go without saying- but just in case you need the reminder: The simplest way to show appreciation is to say “thank you.” The trick is to mention something specific and explain how someone’s efforts impacted you and- ideally- the company. For example, rather than stop at, “Thank you so much for all of your hard work with the client kickoff,” continue with, “The client was so impressed with the exercises you put together. They really helped to start the relationship off on a positive note!” So, start implementing these nine tips today. Not only will your co-workers feel more appreciated, but you may soon find that you’re feeling less stressed and healthier yourself. And wouldn’t that be nice? How to Use Hard Closing Techniques

How to Use Hard Closing Techniques How to Use Hard Closing Techniques Like it or not, sometimes the only sales closing technique that works is a hard close. This is face to face, belly to belly, show no fear, get the deal signed type of selling. Often associated (and often associated incorrectly) with used car sales professionals, hard closing is not usually fun or enjoyable. While being able to hard close may earn you respect from your fellow sales professionals, it wont help you build long-lasting customer relationships. Hard closing is not for everyone and should only be used when either you have no other closing skills or nothing else is working. When to Use the Hard Close   There are some customers that, no matter how much value you build into your product or service, and no matter how amazing of a job you did in your presentation, will not or cannot make a buying decision. Though it may seem brutal, it may be time for you to pull out the hard close from your bag of sales tools. The reason that the hard close should only be used when all else fails is that using the hard close is either all or nothing. With most other types of closes, if the customer says no, you still have the possibility to try to close the sale again at a later date. But when you employ the hard close and the customer says no, you are most likely done with that customer. Heres the trick to deciding when to use the hard close: Use it only when you have nothing to lose. Your State of Mind If you have determined that you have nothing to lose and have preferably consulted with either your sales manager or a tenured, successful sales professional, its time to get into the hard close state of mind. Before the first word comes out of your mouth, you need to decide that you will not stop closing until you are either asked to leave, your prospect becomes visibly angry, or you hear at least five customer declinations. Most rookie sales professionals and unsuccessful reps stop closing after the first no they hear from their customers. The fact is that most sales require getting past three no responses, and several take a few more. Though there is no golden rule, stopping your closing attempts after five refusals is a good rule of thumb. Any more and you risk not only getting the customer very angry but also having them harm your reputation in their networking circles. Try to remember the saying, Drive to five, then drive away. Do some pre-call planning to map out your approach. Relying on your quick wit and ability to spin is often not enough to successfully complete a hard close. Write down all the possible customer objections that you can think of and how you will respond to these objections. Each of your objection-responses must end with a closing question. Whether that closing question is can we move forward now? or does that make sense to you? doesnt really matter. What does matter is that you remove the customers objections, one by one, and move on to either the next objection or to the final closing question? Your Customers State of Mind Hard closes create stress, fear, anger, resentment, and a slew of other unpleasant emotions for customers. They know you are trying to close them and that they either dont want to buy from you or have not been convinced to do so yet. When you begin your close, their walls will immediately go up. Depending on how well they manage their stress, they will either become sharper or duller with their thoughts. If they become sharper thinkers, you need to be even sharper and more realistic that you probably wont be able to get the deal closed. If, however, their ability to think on their feet becomes weaker, you need to respond quickly and use trial closes as often as you can. The key point to remember is that during a hard close, the person with the most confidence and certainty will win.

How to Become an IT Manager

How to Become an IT Manager How to Become an IT Manager “I am C-3PO, human-cyborg relations.” If you’ve seen the original Star Wars films, you’re familiar with this quote, and if you work as an IT manager, you might feel like it accurately describes your job. No, nobody in this scenario is a droid, but IT managers do serve as a vital bridge between the professionals and hardware that keep a company’s technology in working order and the employees that rely on that technology to conduct business. As new workplace technology continues to develop, the IT manager’s role has evolved to keep up with the changing needs of both sides. Let’s take a look at where the role of the information technology manager started and where it’s heading in the future. IT managers then: roots in data processing The title of IT manager (sometimes synonymous with CIO, depending on the company), has its roots in the late 1980s and 1990s. The job evolved from the electronic data processing manager and data processing manager roles in the early days of computing, beginning with the mainframe era in the 1960s. End users and the impact of computer downtime on a business’s bottom line weren’t even blips on the radar.   In the 1970s and early 1980s, IT departments were separate entities within companies and were responsible for controlling massive mainframe computers that served the entire business. The isolated nature of the IT department meant that information technology professionals rarely had contact with other employees within the company. By the late 1980s, distributed computing environments began to appear, leading to smaller IT departments organized by business division or geography. In the early 1990s, some of the first IT managers, then more likely called MIS managers, were tasked with ensuring that key management members had the necessary information systems at their disposal. When mainframe computing began to disappear in the mid-1990s and gave way to enterprise resource planning (ERP), the role of the IT manager expanded to provide solutions to entire departments and organizations, rather than a single manager. IT managers now: better integration Today, the IT manager’s core duties include overseeing in-house networks, managing technology upgrades, choosing appropriate hardware/software and maintaining a company’s servers and computers. IT managers may also be responsible for structuring and testing an organization’s network, as well as training employees on how to use network components and coaching their own teams. Many of the functions that were important in the early days are still important today. However, IT managers must now stay up-to-date on the latest developments in technology, which, as virtually everyone knows today, changes at breakneck speed. Planning migrations to the cloud and protecting confidential information from security threats have become common tasks. Additionally, as computing becomes more and more vital to business, information technology managers are becoming increasingly integrated with the day-to-day operations of other departments within a company. While in the past the IT department was seen as a siloed, foreign entity, the expansion of IT within the modern company and the shift of technology to the cloud have done much to reverse this trend.
